Kokopelli field sculpture

A painter for over 30 years, Nancy has developed her artistic skills through experimentation and art training in Illinois, Kentucky and California.  She holds an AA in studio art and a BA with honors in computer video imaging. She has studied art with regionally and nationally known artists such as Sam Savitt, Nita Engel, George Rivera and Tom Lynch. She has taught video editing for animation and motion graphics, and she designs web sites for artists and small business. She has a passion for teaching art to young and old, and actively seeks exhibits for her versatile paintings. She demos her techniques to art clubs and holds classes and workshops on a regular basis. She has also juried art shows and held critiques.

Nancy has developed a number of bodies of work in realism, abstract, and pointillism. Her recent return to the countryside of the Midwest has inspired a new series of drawings in pointillism using pen and ink and plein aire paintings in watercolor. Her recent work has included an interior wall mural in a rural farmhouse and participation in The Fields Project where her Kokopelli Field Sculpture was featured on the front page of local newspapers in Oregon, Il.

Her abstracted landscapes are created with fluid acrylic paint, mediums and water. She pours paint directly onto the canvas and then uses gravity and a squirt bottle to get the paint flowing. She usually starts with analogous colors and adds complimentary color later in the process. Some of her paintings are done quickly with just a couple of layers of color. Other pieces develop over time, and take many layers to achieve a finished look. She trusts the painting to “tell” her when it’s done.

Nancy has been teaching art since 2001. In her classes the student learns about composition, color relationships, and training the eye to see. While some traditional methods are taught, Nancy’s classes are mostly about having fun and not worrying about outcomes. “My goal in teaching is to give the artist the ability to totally express themselves and have a blast creating art. I try to help students put worry aside and give them a chance to let themselves explore their creativity without restriction.” Nancy tailors her classes to the needs of the students. No matter what the artistic ability, you’ll most likely come out of Nancy’s classes having had a good time and with paintings you are proud of.
